During Journalism Camp this year, we took a very exciting and informative trip to KDKA’s News Station for the live filming of the June 26th noon news. I had previously been on a live broadcast of a news type station-’Good Morning America’- but this was much different.

On this trip, we were able to see all the behind the scenes action and how everything came together. We saw how the green screen worked, how the director called everything, the giant switcher, and all the graphics. We witnessed how quickly things move and how focused and prepared the crew was beforehand and the producer told us about how much work goes into a show.

I take a broadcasting class in high school and it has led me to be interested in a career path similar to what the crew of KDKA did in the show. Hearing Kristine Sorensen spoke about what it’s like to be a reporter, news anchor, and editor and what she did to get there was really inspiring and fascinating.

Taking a tour of the studio, control room, sound room, and where all of the staff works was a very remarkable experience. It was a very educational and captivating opportunity.
